NEW DELHI – The free trade agreement between India and the European Union offers "a ray of hope for stability" in an environment marked by global trade turmoil, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal said Tuesday. The trade deal was concluded in January.

The deal covers one-fourth of the world and could benefit 2 billion people, Agrawal said at Biofach 2026 in Germany. The two regions have strong synergy in terms of demography as well as supply strength and demand capacity, he said. The EU has manufacturing strength while India has the demand capacity, Agrawal added.

The trade deal offers tariff concessions on over 95% of export value for both sides. New Delhi and Brussels are currently engaged in legal scrubbing of the agreement and aim to sign and implement it by the end of 2026. With this deal, the two sides aim to double their bilateral trade by 2032. In the financial year 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), India-EU trade was worth $64 billion.  End
