MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in key markets of Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh were steady on Tuesday due to subdued demand at existing price levels and need-based buying, traders said. Prices may remain range-bound or increase only slightly in the coming days during festivals such as Holi, they said.

Mills in Maharashtra kept prices steady due sluggish demand, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices fell by INR 10 per 100 kg the previous day. In the coming days it is most likely to remain range-bound or increase by INR 5-INR 10 per 100 kg, Kuvadia said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as there was need-based demand and prices have already risen significantly, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Mills are not in a hurry to offload stocks at the moment as there is ample time to meet the monthly sales quota, he said. Prices are expected to rise in the coming days due to demand during Ramzan and Holi, he said.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3,910-INR 4,130 per 100 kg in West Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,920-INR 4,120 per 100 kg in Central Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,872-INR 4,012 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Flat at INR 3,820-INR 3,860 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1807 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was steady at 14.29 cents per pound.  End
