NEW DELHI – The Opposition Tuesday submitted a notice to the Secretary General of the Lok Sabha to move a resolution in the House to remove Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla for "consistently preventing Opposition members from raising issues of legitimate public concerns". The notice has been signed by at least 118 MPs.

The notice lists various reasons for moving the resolution, including not allowing the Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi to speak on Feb. 2, the suspension of eight opposition bloc members of Parliament on Feb. 3, permitting BJP member Nishikant Dubey to make "wholly objectionable and personalised attacks on two former prime ministers without being reprimanded" on Feb. 4, and the Speaker's allegations on Feb. 5 that Congress MPs could do "something unexpected" to the prime minister during the reply to the motion of thanks to the President's address.

As per Article 94(c) of the Constitution of India, a motion for removal of Lok Sabha speaker can be moved with the support of at least 50 members, and only after giving 14 days notice. The resolution has to be passed by an effective majority.

"This is not an isolated instance. The Leader of The Opposition in the Lok Sabha is almost invariably not allowed to speak," the notice, submitted by Congress MPs Kodikkunnil Suresh and Mohammad Javed, read.

Earlier, the INDIA bloc leaders met at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge's chamber in parliament house to discuss the strategy. Sources said that after the submission of the notice, the Opposition would take part in the discussion over Budget. End
