MUMBAI – Prices of chana and tur fell Tuesday, while prices of urad were unchanged in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of both chana and tur fell due to a rise in arrivals of the freshly harvested crop, they said. Prices of urad were steady due to a lack of fresh cues, they said.

Prices of old CHANA prices in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by INR 50 from Monday to INR 5,600-INR 5,625 per 100 kg, while prices of new chana also fell by INR 50 from the previous day to INR 5,300-INR 5,400 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Prices are weighed down by arrivals of the new rabi chana crop, he said. Arrivals of the freshly harvested crop from Maharashtra began in full swing this week, with the Akola market receiving around 1,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) every day, he said.

Prices are likely to fall further in the near term as arrivals are likely to increase, Kedia said. However, the downtrend is expected to be temporary as stockists and millers are likely to begin their purchases soon, he said. "Those who buy chana in bulk are just waiting for prices to go down a bit more so that they can begin buying," he said.

Though imports of chana from Australia are ongoing, it is unlikely to have any bearing on domestic chana prices in the near term, Kedia said. Buyers typically prefer the newer domestic crop over imports as the former is fresher and of better quality, he said. With arrivals of the new crop commencing in most major markets, it is also more easily available and accessible than imports, he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi fell by INR 25 from the previous day to INR 5,700-INR 5,725 per 100 kg, traders said.

Prices of new TUR in Akola, Maharashtra, fell INR 150 from Monday to INR 8,150-INR 8,200 per 100 kg, Kedia said. Prices fell as robust arrivals of the new kharif crop continued, he said. The quality of arrivals of the new crop has improved, which has reduced some fears of extensive crop damage, he said. However, arrivals of medium-quality tur are still higher than those of high-quality tur, he said.

Demand from millers is also beginning to decline as their processing pipeline is almost stocked up completely, Kedia said. "There is low demand for processed tur, or tur dal, too, which is weighing on prices," he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, fell INR 50 from the previous day to INR 8,450-INR 8,550 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,050 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 7,800-INR 8,800 per 100 kg. Prices were steady due to the absence of cues, they said.

Urad prices are expected to remain range-bound in the near term as millers continue to make need-based purchases amid muted demand for urad dal, or processed urad, the association said in its weekly report on Monday. A fall in prices is unlikely as domestic availability is limited and shipments of urad from both Myanmar and Brazil have decreased, it said.  End
