MUMBAI – Farmers in Gujarat have begun sowing crops for the summer crop or zaid season. As of Monday, the area sown under summer crops was 4,388 hectares, down 80% from 21,782 hectares sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department.

The slump in sowing figures is majorly due to a delay in the crop cycle this year, which began with a delay in the kharif crop harvest due to excessive rainfall in September and October. This in turn delayed the sowing and harvest of rabi crops, which has subsequently delayed the sowing of summer crops.

The area sown under paddy was down at 1,106 hectares from 15,607 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Maize acreage was up at 50 hectares from 38 hectares last year.

Moong acreage fell to 161 hectares from 446 hectares sown last year, according to the report. The area sown under urad also slipped to 22 hectares from 184 hectares a year ago.

The area sown under groundnut was 47 hectares, down from 190 hectares sown in the previous year, the report showed. Sesame acreage also fell to 260 hectares from 298 hectares last year.

Sugarcane acreage in the state was down at 624 hectares from 1,056 hectares covered last year, according to the report. The area sown under vegetables fell to 983 hectares from 1,644 hectares a year ago. The area sown under onion, which is not included in the vegetable acreage, was 10 hectares, down from 80 hectares last year.

In Gujarat, summer crops are sown in February and March, and harvested in May and June. Bajra, paddy, sesame, and moong are the main crops grown in the state during the summer.  End
