MUMBAI – Malaysia's crude palm oil production in January was 1.6 million tonnes, down nearly 14% on month, according to preliminary data from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board. Malaysia's total palm oil stocks in January fell nearly 8% from the preceding month to 2.8 million tonnes. Exports during the month were up more than 11% from the previous month to nearly 1.5 million tonnes, the board said.
Palm oil imports, including of processed oils, in January were at 32,316 tonnes, down nearly 3% from the previous month, according to the data.
A survey by news agency Reuters had forecast the country's inventories at 2.9 million tonnes, output at 1.6 million tonnes, and exports at 1.4 million tonnes. Malaysia is the world's second-largest producer of crude palm oil and India is the largest consumer of edible oils. At 1105 IST, the most-active April contract of crude palm oil on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives was at 4,121 ringgits (INR 95,267.38) per tonne, down 0.9% from the previous close.
