MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar fell in the key markets of Maharashtra on Monday due to sluggish demand at higher price levels, traders said. On the other hand, mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as prices have already increased significantly, traders said.

Mills in Maharashtra cut prices by INR 10 per 100 kg due to sluggish demand at elevated levels, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices have risen by about INR 150 per 100 kg over the past 10 days due to strong demand during the Makar Sankranti festival and the wedding season, Kuvadia said.

Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as there was need-based demand and prices have already risen significantly, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. Mills are not in a hurry to offload stocks at the moment as there is ample time to meet the monthly sales quota, he said. In the state's resale markets, prices rose by INR 5 per 100 kg.

Prices are expected to rise in the coming days due to demand during Ramzan and Holi, he said. Moreover, sugar production has declined in several parts of Uttar Pradesh due to a fall in sugarcane availability, which has led a few mills in the state to halt crushing, driving prices higher, he said.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3,910-INR 4,130 per 100 kg in West Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,920-INR 4,120 per 100 kg in Central Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 10 at INR 3,872-INR 4,012 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Down INR 10 at INR 3,820-INR 3,860 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1716 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was steady at 14.17 cents per pound.  End

US$1 = INR 90.75
