NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of jeera, coriander, and turmeric fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Monday. Turmeric prices were weighed down by a rise in arrivals of the new crop in key producing regions, while jeera and coriander prices fell amid muted demand at higher levels, analysts said.
At 1721 IST, the most-active April contract of TURMERIC was down 3.3% at INR 15,524 per 100 kilograms, amid a gradual rise in new crop arrivals across key producing belts such as Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, which weighed on sentiment, analysts at SMC Global Securities said. The pressure from the arrivals is expected to intensify in the coming weeks, keeping prices in check, they said.
The most-active March contract of JEERA was down 0.9% at INR 23,500 per 100 kg, owing to falling buying interest at high prices, SMC Global said. Prices have been rising as cumin acreage in Gujarat, one of the key producing regions of the spice, has fallen. However, comfortable carry-in stocks and muted export demand are limiting further gains, Kedia advisory said in a note. Export interest from Gulf countries and China has improved marginally, but buyers remain highly price sensitive, the brokerage added.
The most-active April contract of CORIANDER was down 2.1% at INR 10,974 per 100 kg owing to need-based trading activity at higher prices, SMC said. Prices of coriander had been rising owing to a drop in acreage so far and fears of crop damage. Movement in coriander prices is likely to be affected by the current market scenario, including inventory, arrivals, and weather in the near future, SMC Global said.
