MUMBAI – Prices of chana showed a mixed trend while prices of tur and moong were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Chana prices fell in some markets owing to a rise in arrivals of the new rabi crop amid sluggish demand, they said. Tur prices were steady as demand for the legume matched the rise in new crop arrivals, they said. Moong prices were uchanged because of the absence of fresh cues, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 50 from Friday to INR 5,700-INR 5,750 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices fell owing to a rise in arrivals of the new rabi crop, he said. Arrivals of the freshly harvested crop began from Karnataka last week while new arrivals from Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh have begun this week, he said. With a seasonal low in demand for chana dal, or processed chana, and besan, or chana flour, prices are buckling under the pressure of arrivals, he said.

The quality of the new chana crop--especially from Karnataka--is "good", Kochar said. "Yield is 15% up this year," due to favourable sowing conditions in December and January, he said. Prices are likely to fall further by INR 100-INR 200 per 100 kg in the near term as arrivals begin from all over the country, he said. In the medium term, prices are expected to rise as stockists are likely to begin their purchases, he said. The market is also banking on the government's procurement of the legume at the minimum support price of INR 5,875 per 100 kg to keep prices from falling steeply, he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,750-INR 5,775 per 100 kg, traders said.

Prices of new TUR in Solapur, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 7,500-INR 8,500 per 100 kg, and prices of old tur were also steady at INR 7,200-INR 8,000 per 100 kg, said Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader. About 35–40 trucks with 20,000–25,000 kg each of new tur, and only 3-4 trucks with old tur stock arrived in the market, he said.

Prices are steady as demand for tur is keeping pace with the rise in arrivals of the new crop, Sanklecha said. However, a slight downtrend in prices is expected in the near term as arrivals from Vidarbha, Maharashtra, are expected to increase, he said. "Prices could stay under some pressure for the next 15–20 days," he said. However, prices are unlikely to fall below the minimum support price of INR 8,000 per 100 kg, he said. "The Karnataka government is procuring the legume at the minimum support price, and Maharashtra (government) will also begin procuring soon, so prices won't go below INR 8,000 per 100 kg," he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 8,500-INR 8,600 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MOONG prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 6,700-INR 7,000 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of moong in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, were steady at INR 5,000-INR 8,000 per 100 kg. Prices were unchanged due to the lack of cues, Sanklecha said. Prices of moong are expected to rise in the short term as arrivals of the rabi crop have declined substantially and the sowing of the summer crop moong is not expected to begin "anytime soon", he said.  End
