MUMBAI – Prices of wheat and maize showed mixed trends while prices of rice were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of wheat were steady in some markets while they fell in others owing to sluggish demand for old stocks with buyers preferring to wait for new crop arrivals, they said. Prices of maize fell in some markets due to a slowdown in need-based demand from millers, they said. Prices of rice remained unchanged due to a lack of fresh cues, they said.

WHEAT prices in Kota, Rajasthan, fell by INR 30 per 100 kilograms from Friday to INR 2,440-INR 2,470 per 100 kg, said Ravi Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals fell 50% to 3,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said. Prices fell despite a fall in arrivals as "buyers are not interested in the old stock", he said.

Currently, only millers are active in the market, who are making purchases on a hand-to-mouth basis, Mehta said. "Everybody, especially stockists, are focused only on the new crop arrivals which will begin after a month," he said. Stockists prefer newer, fresher crop over the old stocks, he said. "They (stockists) are also waiting for prices to go down further once new arrivals begin so that they can begin their bulk purchases," he said.

Prices of the staple grain are likely to fall further once the new crop starts arriving in the markets, Mehta said. Bulk purchases by stockists are only likely to support prices at lower levels, he said. "We have enough carry-over stock of the old wheat too, so stockists' purchases won't be enough to raise prices," he said.

The price of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. The price of wheat at Vashi in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra, remained steady at INR 2,850 per 100 kg, Devendra Vora, a wholesale trader, said.

MAIZE price in Indore fell INR 10 from the previous week to INR 1,730 per 100 kg, Kochar said. The price fell owing to sluggish demand for old stocks of maize, he said. "Buying is there, but it is slow--mostly need-based demand," he said. Prices of maize at Davangere in Karnataka remained unchanged at INR 1,700–1,900 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals in the market were steady at 4,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), he said. "There has been no change in market activity, everything is as slow as it was last week, so prices are the same," he said.

Prices of the main varieties of RICE remained unchanged in Vashi. The 1401 and 1121 varieties of basmati rice were steady at INR 8,000-INR 8,200 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, respectively, because of the lack of fresh cues, Vora said. The demand for non-basmati rice is steady with continuing exports of the grain to various African countries and stable purchases by millers and traders within India, he said. Prices are likely to remain unchanged in the near term, he said.

Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, were also steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a local trader. Prices are likely to remain unchanged in the near term due to seasonally low demand, he said.  End
