MUMBAI – In an effort to scale up the value chain under the mission for self-reliance in pulses, Minister for Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced that seeds will be released to farmers in different states, instead of being released from Delhi, according to a release by the ministry on Saturday. The agriculture minister launched the "nationwide pulses revolution" from Amlaha, Madhya Pradesh, on Saturday,

For the new seed reform and distribution system under the mission, the government will carry out its "seed to market" arrangement through cluster models, the release quoted Chouhan as saying. Farmers joining clusters will receive seed kits and assistance of INR 10,000 per hectare for model farming, the release said. "...With good seeds, better technology, and adequate financial support, pulses production can reach new heights," it said.

Efforts are underway at the Food Legumes Research Centre, International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas, and the Indian Council of Agricultural Research to increase the productivity of masur, chana, urad, tur, and moong, to develop early-maturing varieties, produce improved seeds, and grow disease-free crops "so that farmers profit more from growing pulses," the release quoted Chouhan as saying.

Efforts to set up pulses mills at cluster levels will be made, and the government will provide subsidy of up to INR 2.5 million to set them up, the release quoted Chouhan as saying. Setting up mills in such clusters will enable both processing and sale of pulses in the same area as where they are produced, and farmers will directly benefit from the value addition, he said.

Under the mission, 1,000 pulses mills will be opened across the country, of which 55 will be established in different clusters of Madhya Pradesh, benefiting the state's farmers especially and creating new local employment opportunities, the release quoted the agriculture minister as saying.  End
