MUMBAI – The Food and Agriculture Organization's All Rice Price Index averaged 102.8 points in January, up 1.8% on month, though it fell 9.5% on year. The on-month increase was largely supported by the strengthening of fragrant rice prices.

The Aromatic rice price index rose 7.1% from December to a 15-month high to 101.3, buoyed by demand from buyers preparing for Ramadan and the Chinese Lunar New Year, the release said. In January, the Aromatic rice price index was 8.8% higher that a year ago, the report said.

Meanwhile Japonica rice price index also rose in January as Calrose rice prices continued to draw support from tenders in the Far East, while tight supplies underpinned short-grain offers in Vietnam. The Japonica rice price index in December was at 96.7, up nearly 1% from last month.

Meanwhile, Indica quotations recovered 0.7% on month to 103.4, the release said. On the other hand, the Glutinous rice price index slid 2.9% to 107.8 due to weak demand. "Export prices of Indica rice were mixed in the major Asian origins in January. Quotations strengthened some more in India, as public domestic procurement and sustained demand from buyers in Africa and Bangladesh overshadowed the influence of another rupee depreciation," according to the report.

India's Pusa Basmati variety rose 24.3% at $1,150.0 in January from the previous month. The average price of 25% broken non-basmati rice exported from India rose to $337.2 per tonne in January from $332.9 per tonne in December and that of 5% broken non-basmati rice rose to $351.4 per tonne in January from $347.7 per tonne, the release showed. The price of 5% parboiled rice from India was up at $356.7 a tonne from $355.2 per tonne in December.

The price of Thailand's A1 Super rice variety rose to $383.3 a tonne in January from $380.8 per tonne in December, while that of Thailand's 25% broken variety fell to $402.3 per tonne from $414.3 per tonne. The price of the benchmark Thai 100% B-white rice fell to $424.3 in January from $439.8, the release said. A relapse in demand caused prices to take a downturn in Thailand, even as the Thai baht continued to strengthen against the dollar, it said.

The price of Vietnam's 25% broken rice fell to $335.1 per tonne in January from $338.7 per tonne in January. Quotations remained on a downtrend in Vietnam, as sales to Filipino buyers following the Jan. 1 removal of the Philippines' import ban on non-specialty rice proved insufficient to offset downward pressure exerted by ample inventories, and due to subdued buying interest from other outlets, the release said.

Pakistan's 5% broken rice price rose to $373.9 per tonne from $354.9 in December, while basmati rice price rose to $990.7 per tonne in January from $985.4 per tonne last month. "A solid pace of sales to African destinations also kept sentiment bullish in Pakistan, where prices reached six-month highs," the release said.

Meanwhile, amid quiet trading activities, prices moved sideways in the Americas, except in Brazil, where efforts to attract sales and large stockpiles lowered quotations, despite the real's appreciation, it said.  End
