Telangana rabi acreage up 8% on yr at 6.60 mln acres as of Wed

MUMBAI – Farmers in Telangana have sown rabi crops across 6.60 million acres (1 acre = 0.4 hectares) as of Wednesday, up 8% from 6.12 million acres a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The state's normal rabi area is 6.87 million acres, of which over 96% has been covered so far.
The area under paddy was up at 4.79 million acres from 4.67 million acres a year ago, the report showed. Maize acreage rose to 1.08 million acres from 672,079 acres a year ago. The acreage of jowar was 230,842 acres, up from 178,300 acres a year ago.
Chana acreage in the state fell to 179,407 acres from 218,669 acres a year ago, according to the report. The area under urad was down at 35,001 acres from 41,932 acres and that under moong fell to 6,193 acres from 6,811 acres. The total area under all rabi pulses was 227,301 acres, down from 276,093 acres a year ago.
The total area under all oilseeds so far slipped to 211,378 acres from 258,557 acres a year ago, the report showed. Groundnut acreage fell to 183,980 acres from 231,572 acres.
Tobacco acreage was down at 10,586 acres from 13,152 acres a year ago, while sugarcane area rose to 15,581 acres from 6,323 acres, according to the report.
The water level in reservoirs across Telangana was 681.12 billion cubic metres as of Wednesday, compared with 681.12 billion cubic metres a year ago, according to the report. End
