--CONTEXT: Govt had imposed wheat stock limit till Mar. 31
MUMBAI – In a significant policy reversal, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution has withdrawn the wheat stock limit order, effective immediately, following improved market availability ahead of the upcoming festive season, the ministry said in a statement Thursday. The government had imposed the wheat stock limit till Mar. 31.
However, all wheat stocking entities are required to declare the stock positions every Friday on the food stock portal. As per the wheat stock declaration by private entities on the Department of Food and Public Distribution's portal for 2025-26, wheat stock availability with private entities is significantly higher at 8.1 million tonnes from 3 million tonnes a year ago, indicating a comfortable supply in the country, the ministry said.
Wholesale wheat prices have fallen to INR 2,852.3 per 100 kg from INR 2,970.1 per 100 kg a year ago, indicating subdued demand and excess supply, the ministry said.
The order also comes in the light of higher acreage, expected record wheat output, and a significant amount of wheat in government stores. Wheat acreage has increased 1.9% on year to 33.4 million hectares as of Friday, up from 32.8 million hectares a year ago. End
