NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of jeera, coriander, and turmeric fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange Thursday. Jeera and coriander prices declined amid cautious buying at higher levels, analysts said. Prices of turmeric were weighed down by a rise in arrivals of the new crop in key producing regions, they said.
At 1424 IST, the most-active April contract of TURMERIC was down 0.5% at INR 16,710 per 100 kilograms due to a gradual rise in new-crop arrivals across key producing states such as Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, analysts at SMC Global Securities said. The pressure from the arrivals is expected to intensify in the coming months, keeping prices in check, they said. Despite concern about the quality of early arrivals, the expanding supply may continue to weigh on sentiment, the brokerage said.
The most-active March contract of JEERA was down 0.8% at INR 23,560 per 100 kg on cautious buying by investors at higher prices, SMC Global said. Prices have been rising as cumin acreage in Gujarat, one of the key producing regions of the spice, has fallen. Area sown with jeera was down at 408,199 hectares from 476,537 hectares a year ago, latest data from the state's agriculture department showed. Delayed field readiness has made this one of the slowest cumin-sowing seasons in Gujarat in recent years, Kedia Advisory said.
The most-active April contract of CORIANDER was down 0.9% at INR 11,302 per 100 kg owing to need-based trading activity at higher prices, SMC said. Prices of coriander had been rising owing to a drop in acreage so far and fears of crop damage, Kedia Advisory said. Movement in coriander prices is likely to be affected by the current market scenario, including inventory, arrivals, and the weather in the near future, SMC Global said.
