MUMBAI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Maharashtra fell on Wednesday as demand was sluggish at higher rates, traders said. Mills in Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady as demand was need-based, they said.

Mills in Maharashtra cut prices of the sweetener by INR 10 per 100 kg as demand was poor at higher prices, said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. Prices have risen by about INR 150 per 100 kg over the past 10 days due to strong demand during Makar Sankranti festival and wedding season across north India, Kuvadia said.

In Uttar Pradesh, sugar prices were steady due to limited buying at higher rates, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. In the resale market, prices rose by INR 5 per 100 kg, he said. Prices may rise further in the coming days due to demand during the fasting month of Ramzan and for Holi festival, he said.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--Flat at INR 3,900-INR 4,120 per 100 kg in west Uttar Pradesh

--Flat at INR 3,920-INR 4,120 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh

--Down INR 10 at INR 3,982-INR 4,022 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Down INR 10 at INR 3,830-INR 3,870 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1949 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was down 0.3% at 14.59 cents per pound, tracking fall in NYMEX crude oil prices. Lower crude oil prices lead to fall in the diversion of sucrose for production of ethanol, increasing availability of sugar.  End
