Maharashtra rabi acreage up 4% on year at 6.68 mln ha as of Mon

MUMBAI – Farmers in Maharashtra have sown rabi crops across 6.68 million hectares as of Monday, up nearly 4% from 6.44 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The state's normal rabi acreage, which is the average area sown during the last five years, is 5.78 million hectares.
Wheat acreage rose to 1.49 million hectares from 1.30 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. Maize acreage rose to 656,833 hectares from 483,936 hectares, while the area under jowar fell to 1.39 million hectares from 1.54 million hectares a year ago.
The area sown under chana in the state rose slightly to 2.89 million hectares from 2.88 million hectares a year ago, according to the report. The total acreage under all rabi pulses was 3.07 million hectares, up from 3.04 million hectares a year ago.
The total area under oilseeds in the state so far was 62,488 hectares, down from 68,239 hectares a year ago, according to the report. Safflower acreage in the state fell to 30,854 hectares from 34,142 hectares.
Rabi crops in the state are sown after the southwest monsoon and harvested between January and April. Besides chana, other major rabi crops grown in the state are wheat, jowar, barley, oats, mustard, and peas.
The water level in dams across Maharashtra was 74.96% of the live storage capacity as of Wednesday, compared with 67.30% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department. End
