MUMBAI – Prices of chana and urad were unchanged, while prices of tur fell in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Chana prices were steady due to low market activity, traders said. Prices of tur fell as arrivals of the new crop rose and rates corrected after a steep rise last week, they said. Urad prices remained unchanged due to lack of fresh cues, they said.

CHANA prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 5,975-INR 6,000 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Prices were unchanged amid tepid market activity, he said. Arrivals in the market have declined considerably as farmers have exhausted their stocks of the old chana crop, he said. Demand for chana is also seasonally low, which is preventing any rise in prices, he said. Millers and traders who deperately need to make purchases are making do with chana being offloaded by stockists from their warehouses, he said.

Prices are expected to remain range-bound till arrivals of the new rabi chana begin, Kedia said. The market has begun receiving small batches of the freshly harvested crop. However, the amount is too insignificant to affect prices, he said. Arrivals in Maharashtra are likely to begin in full swing after 15 days, he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,975-INR 5,800 per 100 kg, traders said.

Prices of new TUR in Akola fell by INR 8,475-INR 8,500 per 100 kg, Kedia said. Prices fell as arrivals of the new crop from major tur-producing regions in Maharashtra increased, he said. Prices also fell on a "much-needed correction" after they soared past INR 9,000 per 100 kg in various markets across the country last week, he said. "Speculations of really bad damage to the crop have died down for now, so that's why also prices have corrected today," he said.

Prices are likely to remain in a downtrend this week as robust arrivals of the freshly harvested crop are expected to continue, Kedia said. However, prices are unlikely to fall below the minimum support price of INR 8,000 per 100 kg, he said. Though arrivals have increased, the bulk of the new crop is still of low-to-medium quality, he said. Farmers are also likely to begin holding back stocks if prices fall below the minimum support price level, he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 100 from the previous day to INR 8,500-INR 8,600 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

URAD prices in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,850 per 100 kg, traders said. Prices of urad in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 7,800-INR 8,800 per 100 kg. Prices were steady due to lack of fresh cues, they said.

Urad prices are expected to rise in the short term due to a rise in demand from millers and a decline in supply, the association said in its weekly report on Monday. Arrivals of the kharif urad crop have reduced, while those of the new rabi crop are still a few weeks away, it said. With imports from Brazil slowing down, the market is more dependent on imports from Myanmar.  End
