India's key fuel consumption rises in Jan; diesel demand up 3% YoY

MUMBAI – India's fuel consumption rose at the beginning of calendar year 2026, with key fuels registering on-year growth in January, according to the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell's January oil and gas flash report. Petrol and diesel demand showed steady expansion while consumption of aviation turbine fuel and that of liquefied natural gas rose during the same period, according to the report.
India's fuel consumption opened the calendar year on a strong foot with petrol consumption reaching 3.49 million tonnes, up nearly 6% on year and diesel consumption touched nearly 8 million tonnes, up 3% on year. Aviation turbine fuel and liquified natural gas consumption also rose to 821,000 tonnes, up nearly 5% on year, and 3.18 million tonnes, up over 7% on year, respectively, according to the report.
Cumulative petrol consumption for 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) rose over 6% on year to 35.42 million tonnes, while diesel consumption rose 3% on year to 78.29 million tonnes. The aviation turbine fuel consumption also rose nearly 2% on year to 7.59 million tonnes and liquified natural gas demand rose over 7% on year to 25.85 million tonnes, according to the report. End
