NEW DELHI – Food Corp. of India will offer 126,000 tonnes of wheat in its online auction under the 2025-26 open market sales scheme on Wednesday, according to sources. Last Wednesday, FCI offered 117,000 tonnes and sold nearly 73% or around 85,000 tonnes.
In the upcoming auction, FCI will offer 26,000 tonnes of wheat to Punjab, 23,000 tonnes to Assam, and 10,000 tonnes to Haryana, according to market sources. FCI will offer 8,000 tonnes to Uttar Pradesh and 7,500 tonnes each to Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.
As last year, the government has earmarked 3.0 million tonnes of wheat for sale in 2025-26 under the open market sales scheme. As of Jan. 28, FCI has sold around 419,604 tonnes through five rounds of auction.
After beginning wheat auctions in mid-November, FCI temporarily suspended them in December due to weak demand amid comfortable market supplies. In November, FCI offered 200,000 tonnes at each fortnightly auction, but sold only about 40% of that quantity. According to some market participants, the government was dumping wheat into an already dead market and pressuring market prices.
The corporation resumed wheat sales on Jan. 14 and has since been offering around 100,000 tonnes per weekly auction, drawing modest responses with 70-80% sales in each round. FCI sells wheat to millers and processors under the open market sales scheme to liquidate stocks held above buffer norms and moderate market prices by augmenting market supplies. As of Jan. 1, FCI had 27.5 million tonnes of wheat stocks, up 49% on year, according to the corporation data. End
