India Apr-Nov spices exports up 14% on year at 1.2 mln tn, jeera down 11%

NEW DELHI – India's spices exports rose 14% on year to 1.20 million tonnes in Apr-Nov from 1.06 million tonnes a year ago, according to data released by the Spices Board India. However, in value terms, exports were largely flat at $2.93 billion. Except for jeera, or cumin seed, all major spices registered an on-year rise in shipments during Apr-Nov.

 

India's chilli exports during Apr-Nov rose 27% on year to 481,446 tonnes while the export value rose a modest 4% on year to $765.2 million, according to the data. Chilli is India's top spices export both in value and volume terms.

 

Meanwhile, the export value of small cardamom, or elaichi, rose 122% on year to $241.2 million, with shipments rising 96% year to 8,648 tonnes. Large cardamom exports rose 18% on year to 924 tonnes, valued at $19.1 million, up 32% on year, according to the data. 

 

Jeera exports on the other hand declined 11% on year to 142,217 tonnes, with the export value falling 27% on year to $380.1 million. However, coriander exports rose 12% on year to 42,844 tonnes, with the value rising 10% on year to $52.7 million, according to the data. 

 

Turmeric exports rose 5% on year to 127,530 tonnes, but the value of the exports fell 5% on year to $224.4 million. Meanwhile, exports of ginger, or adrak, zoomed 89% on year to 94,772 tonnes, with the value rising 62% on year to $98.6 million. India shipped 70,552 tonnes of curry powder or paste, up 41% on year, with the value of the exports rising 8% on year to $175.3 million.
