Global body says production of primary aluminium up over 3% on month in Dec

MUMBAI – Global production of primary aluminium rose over 3% month-on-month to 6.30 million tonnes in December, data from the International Aluminium Institute showed. On an annual basis, production was up only marginally.
Global daily average aluminium production in December rose to 203,100 tonnes from 202,800 tonnes the previous month. Aluminium production in China rose by 121,000 tonnes from a month ago to 3.77 million tonnes in December, the data showed. The country accounts for around 60% of the metal's global production.
In Asia, excluding China, production rose to 415,000 tonnes in December from 402,000 tonnes the previous month. In Africa, aluminium output in December rose 3,000 tonnes to 137,000 tonnes.
In the Gulf Cooperation Council, production increased 16,000 tonnes to 524,000 tonnes in December. Production of primary aluminium in Europe, including Russia, rose to 610,000 tonnes in December from 584,000 tonnes in the previous month. The output of the metal in North America rose 12,000 tonnes to 334,000 tonnes in December and production in South America rose 6,000 tonnes to 133,000 tonnes.
Global alumina production rose over 3% on month to 13.57 million tonnes in December, as per the latest available data. Friday, the three-month aluminium futures contract on the London Metal Exchange closed at $3,156.5 per tonne, up 0.4% from the previous close. End
