India's sugar output up 17% YoY at 19.3 mln tn as of Sat, says federation

MUMBAI – In the sugar season that started in October, mills in India have produced 19.3 million tonnes of the sweetener as of Saturday, up around 17% on year, according to data from the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories. Sugar production has risen due to higher sugarcane yield and improvement in recovery rate to 9.1% from 8.9% last year.

 

As of Saturday, 508 mills were operational across the country, against 505 units last year. The federation has pegged sugar production for the year ending September at 31.5 million tonnes, up over 20% on year, with 11.0 million tonnes coming from Maharashtra, 10.5 million tonnes from Uttar Pradesh, and 5.5 million tonnes from Karnataka. Last year, India had produced around 26.2 million tonnes of sugar.

 

According to the state-wise details provided by the federation, sugar production in Uttar Pradesh was 5.5 million tonnes as of Saturday, up from 5.3 million tonnes at the same time last year. However, sugarcane crushing in the state fell to 55.9 million tonnes from 57.9 million tonnes a year ago. There were 118 operational mills in the state, lower than 121 mills operating at the same time last year. The average sugar recovery rose to 9.9% from 9.1% last year.

 

Sugar production in Maharashtra surged over 42% to nearly 7.9 million tonnes as of Saturday. The state's production rose as sugarcane crushing jumped around 41% to 86.8 million tonnes, coupled with a rise in sugar recovery rate to 9.1% from 9.0% a year ago. Maharashtra had 206 mills running as of Saturday, compared with 193 mills last year.

 

In Karnataka, sugar production was 3.6 million tonnes as of Saturday, up from 3.3 million tonnes last year. As of Saturday, 66 mills were running in the state against 64 mills last year. The average sugar recovery rate in the state fell to 8.2% from 8.5% last year, the federation said.  End
