NEW DELHI – The government has raised the February sugar sales quota for Maharashtra, but reduced it for Karnataka, according to a release by the Department of Food and Public Distribution on Friday. The quota for Maharashtra in February is higher by over 9% on month at 935,898 tonnes, and for Uttar Pradesh it is almost flat at 707,687 tonnes. On the other hand, the sales quota for Karnataka is 6% lower than the previous month at 328,394 tonnes, according to the release.

The Centre has set the all-India domestic sugar sales quota for February at 2.25 million tonnes, 2.3% higher than the 2.20 million tonnes in January but unchanged from February last year. With fewer trade days next month and no major festivals lined up, the market had expected the government to set the domestic sugar sales quota for February at 2.20 million-2.25 million tonnes, in line with February 2025 and January levels.

According to traders, sugar demand is expected to remain seasonally muted in February, though some support is seen from Ramadan and the ongoing wedding season in North India. Demand from bulk consumers such as soft drink and ice-cream makers typically eases during winter amid a drop in temperatures.

The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers. It also sets monthly sales quotas for each sugar mill.

On Thursday, the All India Sugar Trade Association said it expected sugar output for the 2025–26 (Oct-Sept) season to rise 13% on year to 29.6 million tonnes as major sugar-producing states are likely to have increased production in the ongoing season.

The following table details the major state-wise allocation of sugar sales limits for February, with the month-ago level, and the month-on-month change in percentage:
