MUMBAI – Prices of chana rose Friday, while those of tur fell and urad remained unchanged in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Chana prices rose as millers made more need-based purchases amid low supply of the legume, they said. Tur prices fell due to a correction after they surged considerably on Thursday, they said. Masur prices were steady due to a lack of cues, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose INR 50 from Thursday to INR 5,950-INR 6,000 per 100 kg, said Raja Jain, a local trader. Prices rose due to a rise in need-based demand from millers amid low arrivals of the older domestic stocks, he said. While there is no seasonal demand for chana, millers are buying as they need, he added. As such, prices have been fluctuating by INR 50-INR 100 per kg over the past few weeks, he said.

Prices are likely to move in a narrow range till the new rabi chana crop begins arriving in markets in full swing, which is expected in about a month, Jain said. There has been some "usual" damage to the crop due to rainfall in north Indian states, but it is not worrisome, he said. "Chana crop is most endangered by continuous hailstorms, and we don't have to worry about it now because most of the crop isn't even at the flowering stage yet," he said. If the crop is damaged by hail before its flowering stage, it is easier for farmers to replant it, he said. The market is monitoring further weather developments in north India, and particularly in Rajasthan, he said.

Prices of chana in Delhi rose INR 25 from the previous day to INR 5,950-INR 5,975 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, fell INR 100 from Thursday to INR 9,000-INR 9,025 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Prices corrected Friday after surging INR 200-INR 500 per 100 kg across markets the previous day, he said. While lower-than-expected supply of the new tur crop has kept prices on an upward trend, the market got "too excited and hiked prices too much without a proper reason," on Thursday, he said. Prices are likely to continue falling till they reach the INR 8,500-INR 9,000-per-100-kg range, he said.

Arrivals of the new crop are expected to increase starting next week, Kedia said. However, prices are unlikely to buckle too much under arrival pressure, as most of the crop remains below standard quality, he said. "Around 25% of the crop is good quality, while 45% is medium quality, and around 30% is inferior quality," he said.

Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, fell INR 100 from the previous day to INR 8,700-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 5,700-INR 5,750 per 100 kg, Jain said. Prices are steady amid a lack of cues, he said. Low demand for the legume is on par with its low supply, he said. Prices are likely to remain unchanged till arrivals of the new rabi masur crop begin, he said. Though there could be a marginal drop in total output this year, it is unlikely to affect prices, he said. The government is expected to begin procuring the crop if its prices rule below the minimum support price of INR 7,000 per 100 kg for an extended period, he said.

Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,300–INR 5,850 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the choti variety in Lalitpur were also steady at INR 6,500–INR 7,500 per 100 kg.  End
