NEW DELHI – The All India Sugar Trade Association sees the sugar output for the 2025–26 (Oct-Sept) season rising 13% on year to 29.6 million tonnes as major sugar-producing states are likely to have increased production in the ongoing season. Last year, sugar output was 26.2 million tonnes.

In Maharashtra, sugar production is seen rising over 33% to 10.8 million tonnes from 8.1 million tonnes last year, according to the trade body's release on Thursday. Crushing in Maharashtra is expected to continue until February end, but may extend for three mills each in Pune and Solapur districts, and most mills in Jalna and Latur, the association said.

Uttar Pradesh is estimated to produce 9.4 million tonnes, slightly up from 9.3 million tonnes last year. In Uttar Pradesh, yields of the ratoon crop are down 15-20% in Saharanpur and Bijnor districts due to heavy rains, though sucrose recovery is likely to improve to 10.9% from 10.65% in the previous season.

Karnataka's sugar output is expected to rise over 14% on year to 4.9 million tonnes from 4.3 million tonnes last year.

The trade body sees mills diverting 3.4 million tonnes of sucrose or sugar for ethanol production in 2025-26. With 4.7 million tonnes carried forward from last year and with the current year's sugar production, India is estimated to have 34.3 million tonnes of sugar available this season.

Of this, about 29.6 million tonnes sugar is estimated to be consumed domestically. India is expected to export 800,000 tonnes sugar in 2025-26. The government has allowed mills to export 1 million tonnes by September end.

The country is expected to close the 2025-26 season with 4.8 million tonnes sugar as of September end. End
