MUMBAI – The water level in 166 key reservoirs of the country was 126.35 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, which is 68.8% of the total live storage capacity, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The water level was up 7.7% from a year ago and 24.2% higher than the normal storage for the period, which is the average storage for the past 10 years, the data showed.

 

In the northern region, the water level in reservoirs was 12.57 billion cubic metres, which is over 63% of the total live storage capacity. In the same period last year, the water level was nearly 37% of the live storage capacity. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.

 

In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 14.47 billion cubic metres, over 66% of the total live storage capacity, against nearly 63% in the corresponding period last year. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.

 

The water level in the western region was 30.58 billion cubic metres. This is over 80% of the total live storage capacity, against 76% last year. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.

 

In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 34.33 billion cubic metres as of Thursday. This is nearly 71% of the total live storage capacity, compared with nearly 67% a year ago.

 

The water level in the southern region was 34.42 billion cubic metres, over 62% of the total live storage capacity, the data showed. At this time last year, the water level in the region was nearly 64% of the total live storage capacity.

 

Of the 166 reservoirs in the country, 156 reported more than 80% of normal storage and 10 were at 80% or below the normal storage. Of these 10, two reported storage below 50% of the normal.

 

India received an average of 9.8 millimetres of rainfall in the week ended Wednesday, 113% above the normal 4.6 millimetres for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department.  End
