MUMBAI – Prices of tur surged, while prices of chana and masur remained unchanged in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Tur prices touched the INR 9,000 per 100 kg level in several spot markets due to robust demand amid lower-than-expected production of the new crop in Maharashtra and Karnataka, they said. Prices of chana remained steady amid a seasonal low in demand, and masur prices were unchanged due to lack of fresh cues, they said.
Prices of new TUR in Solapur, Maharashtra, jumped by INR 550 from Wednesday to INR 7,500-INR 9,100 per 100 kg, while prices of old tur rose by INR 400 from last week to INR 7,200-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, said Rahul Srinivas, a local trader. About 55–60 trucks with 20,000-25,000 kg of new tur, and only four to five trucks with old tur stock arrived in the market, he said.
Tur prices, which have been on a steep uptrend since last week, jumped considerably on Thursday as the market came to terms with the lower-than-expected production of the new tur crop, Srinivas said. "We were expecting 20% lower tur output this year because of damage to crops in Karnataka but now we think it (output) will be even lower," he said. The market was expecting arrivals from Maharashtra to make up for the low output in Karnataka, but the crop in the former is also reportedly damaged, he said.
While there is rampant demand for tur across the country, there are not enough arrivals to fulfil it, Srinivas said. Prices are likely to keep rising in the near term as the market expects low arrivals of the legume to persist through February, he said. Maharashtra and Karnataka are the top producers of tur in the country.
Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 200 from the previous day to INR 8,900-INR 9,000 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,900-INR 5,950 per 100 kg, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. Prices are steady due to low market activity amid a seasonal slowdown in demand, he said. Prices are expected to rise in the near term due to reports of crop damage in some north Indian states after the rainfall.
Parts of Rajasthan have recorded a continuous wet spell in the past few days, according to the India Meteorological Department. "Some farmers are reporting excess moisture in their fields which is not good for the crop," Mangal said. However, the extent of damage is not "unusual", and is unlikely to cause a steep rise in prices, he said.
Prices could also be lifted by positive sentiment across the pulses market, buoyed by the surge in tur prices, Mangal said. Prices could rise by INR 100-INR 200 per 100 kg in the near term, he said.
Prices of chana in Delhi were steady at INR 5,850-INR 5,875 per 100 kg, traders said.
MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 5,700-INR 5,750 per 100 kg, Mangal said. Prices are unchanged because of a lack of fresh cues, he said. Prices are likely to remain steady till arrivals of the new rabi masur crop begin, he said. The quality of the new crop is good and arrivals likely to begin after Feb. 20, he said. Production of the new crop is likely to remain largely the same as last year, he said.
Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,300–INR 5,850 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the choti variety in Lalitpur were also steady at INR 6,500–INR 7,500 per 100 kg. End
