Maharashtra rabi acreage up 3% on year at 6.60 mln ha as of Tue

MUMBAI – Farmers in Maharashtra have sown rabi crops across 6.60 million hectares as of Tuesday, up more than 3% from 6.38 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture government. The state's normal rabi acreage, which is the average area sown during the last five years, is 5.78 million hectares.
The area under wheat was up at 1.45 million hectares from 1.29 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. Maize acreage rose to 655,557 hectares from 480,539 hectares, while the area under jowar slipped to 1.37 million hectares from 1.51 million hectares a year ago.
Chana acreage in the state was largely unchanged at 2.86 million hectares, according to the report. The total acreage under all rabi pulses was 3.04 million hectares, up from 3.02 million hectares a year ago.
The total area under oilseeds so far was 60,980 hectares, down from 63,673 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Safflower acreage in the state fell to 30,605 hectares from 33,762 hectares.
Rabi crops in the state are sown after the southwest monsoon and harvested between January and April. Besides chana, other major rabi crops grown in the state are wheat, jowar, barley, oats, mustard, and peas.
The water level in dams across Maharashtra was 76.8% of the live storage capacity as of Thursday, compared with 68.9% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department. End
