MUMBAI – The price of wheat in the Vashi market in Navi Mumbai fell slightly Wednesday due to low demand while it remained steady in other key spot markets, traders said. Prices of rice and maize remained unchanged, they said.

WHEAT price in Vashi fell INR 50 per 100 kilograms to INR 2,950 per 100 kg on low demand, said wholesale trader Devendra Vora. The price of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, was steady at INR 2,770 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Wheat prices are expected to fall once arrivals of the new rabi crop begin, he said. Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, were also largely steady at INR 2,450-INR 2,500 per 100 kg, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader.

Some of the standing wheat crop in Rajasthan has reportedly been damaged by unfavourable weather conditions, according to traders. "There is much damage that has happened but actual figures are not yet available," Vora said. However, this is unlikely to affect prices, traders said. Any rise in prices due to supply concerns spurred by crop damage is likely to be offset by arrival pressure, especially as many in the market believe wheat output this year will reach a record high, they said. Arrivals were steady at 4,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

Meanwhile, the Gujarat government has approved the purchase of wheat at the minimum support price of INR 2,585 per 100 kg. To ensure farmers receive a fair price for their produce, wheat will be procured through the Gujarat State Civil Supplies Corp. Ltd., the government said in a press release Tuesday.

The price of MAIZE at Indore remained unchanged at INR 1,770 per 100 kg owing to the lack of fresh cues, Kochar said. "Prices are expected to fall by INR 100 per 100 kg as the new rabi arrivals start," he said. Maize prices in Davangere, Karnataka, were largely steady at INR 1,700-INR 1,900 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals in the market rose by 2,000 bags to 5,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), he said.

Prices of the main varieties of RICE remained unchanged in Vashi. The 1401 and 1121 varieties of basmati rice were steady at INR 8,000-INR 8,200 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-INR 8,800 per 100 kg, respectively, Vora said. There is subdued demand for rice in the market, he said.

Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, were also steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a trader. "Prices are expected to remain steady for around two months, as there is very little demand in the market," Shankar said.  End
