NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of coriander and jeera rose Wednesday while the turmeric contract fell on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange. Prices of jeera rose on good demand and fall in acreage and those of coriander were up because of lower sowing and rising risk of crop damage, analysts said. Prices of turmeric fell as arrival of the new crop in the markets has begun, they said.
At 1508 IST, the most-active April contract of TURMERIC was down 2.4% at INR 16,760 per 100 kilogram, as arrivals of the new crop have begun in the market, SMC Global said in a note. Prospects of rise in arrivals due to a larger crop are also weighing on prices, the brokerage said. However, the fall is seen limited due to uncertainty over the quality of the new crop, the brokerage said. Tight supply due to a weak crop last year is expected to support prices to some extent until arrivals rise substantially.
The most-active March contract of JEERA was up 0.1% at INR 24,040 per 100 kg, on good buying and shift in sowing coverage, SMC said. A fall in prices is unlikely due to persistently low arrivals and delayed sowing, particularly in Gujarat, where the acreage has fallen over 16% from the previous year to 398,000 hectares, marking one of the slowest sowing seasons in recent years. However, the brokerage added that limited buying at higher prices may cap the rise in prices.
The most-active April contract of CORIANDER was up 0.1% at INR 11,140 per 100 kg because of lower sowing and rising risk of crop damage, Kedia Advisory said in a note. Prices are also finding support from weather-related threats in Rajasthan's key producing districts of Jaipur, Ajmer, Dausa, and Tonk, where frost and powdery mildew risks have increased, the brokerage added.
