MUMBAI – The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India currently holds a stock of approximately 1.59 million tonnes of pulses, IGrain said in a post on social media platform X on Tuesday. This stock includes pulses procured from the farmers and imported stock.
NAFED currently holds 540,000 tonnes of moong, 460,000 tonnes of tur, 360,000 tonnes of domestic masur, 160,000 tonnes of chana, 36,000 tonnes of urad, and 37,000 tonnes of imported masur. The total stock of all pulses is less than the quantity stipulated for the buffer stock, according to the data compiled by IGrain.
Around 650,000 tonnes of tur were procured for the central pool during the 2024-25 kharif marketing season. Procurement of the 2025-26 season's crop has also commenced, IGrain said. NAFED has also procured approximately 50,000 tonnes of urad so far in the ongoing season.
The government's procurement of chana during the previous rabi season fell considerably short of the target. As such, the agriculture ministry has begun fixing procurement quota for chana for various producing states this year. Recently, the Karnataka government granted approval for the procurement of 113,000 tonnes of chana in the state.
The government's purchase of pulses will depend on the prevailing domestic market prices. The prices of most pulses are currently below the minimum support price, it said in a post. End
