NEW DELHI – Recognising the importance of commercial and investment partnerships in each other's energy sector, India and Canada Tuesday signed a joint statement on energy cooperation. Under this agreement, Ottawa will ship more crude oil, liquefied natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas to India, while New Delhi will send more refined petroleum products to Canada.
The joint statement was agreed upon by Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri and Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Canada Timothy Hodgson during the ongoing India Energy Week in Goa. The two countries agreed to deepen long-term partnerships aimed at facilitating increased reciprocal investment in the Indian and Canadian energy sectors.
"India, as a major consumer and Canada as a safe, secure and reliable supplier, can act in partnership to deepen trade and ensure stable and secure energy supplies," the oil ministry said in a release. "India and Canada will collaborate to promote and strengthen cooperation across trade in the energy sector, including services."
On the sidelines of the event, the two ministers held a bilateral meeting and launched the renewed India-Canada Ministerial Energy Dialogue. During this meeting, the ministers affirmed the immense importance of energy security and diversity of supply in the safety, well-being, and economic vitality of both countries, the oil ministry said.
The ministers also discussed the importance of climate-related objectives, including efforts to reduce emissions in conventional energy value chains. The two countries will collaborate on renewable energy, including hydrogen, biofuels and sustainable aviation fuel, battery storage, critical minerals, clean technologies, electricity systems, energy supply chain resilience, and the application of artificial intelligence in the energy sector.
This development comes after India and Canada, in November, decided to resume free trade agreement negotiations after a two-year hiatus owing to the souring of bilateral relations. India-Canada relations suffered a major setback in September 2023 when the then Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged that the Indian government had a hand in the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canada-based Khalistani separatist whom New Delhi designated as a terrorist. However, India rejected the charges as absurd and motivated. The Canadian authorities had also arrested four Indian nationals in connection with the murder of Nijjar. This exacerbated tensions between the two nations.
Although trade negotiations were halted, trade continued between the two countries as usual. In 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), India's trade with Canada totalled $8.7 billion, with exports worth $4.2 billion. End
