MUMBAI – The government has set the domestic sugar sales quota for February at 2.25 million tonnes, the Department of Food and Public Distribution said in a post on social media platform X. The quota for next month is 2.3% higher than the 2.20 million tonnes in January but unchanged from February last year.
With fewer trade days next month and no major festivals lined up, the market had expected the government to set domestic sugar sales quota for February at 2.20 million-2.25 million tonnes, in line with February 2025 and January levels.
According to traders, sugar demand is expected to remain seasonally muted in February, though some support is seen from Ramadan and the ongoing wedding season in North India. Demand from bulk consumers such as soft drink and ice-cream makers typically eases during winter amid a drop in temperatures.
The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers. It also sets monthly sales quotas for each sugar mill.
Sugar industry has estimated gross sugar production to rise 16% on year to 34.35 million tonnes, with 3.4–3.9 million tonnes of sucrose or sugar estimated to be diverted for ethanol production. End
