NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all spices traded on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange declined on Tuesday. Prices of turmeric fell on prospects of improved arrivals of the new crop, analysts said. Prices of coriander have been falling amid profit booking after hitting a one-year high last week, while jeera prices fell due to comfortable stocks and subdued export demand, they said.
At 1617 IST, the most-active April contract of TURMERIC was down 2% at INR 17,200 per 100 kilogram, as prospects of rising arrivals from the new crop, as well as a larger crop size, are putting pressure, SMC Global said in a note. However, the downside remains limited amid uncertainty over the quality of this new crop, the brokerage said. Tight supply due to a weak crop last year is expected to support prices to some extent until arrival flows rise substantially, the brokerage said.
The most-active March contract of JEERA was down 1% to INR 24,010 per 100 kg, weighed down by comfortable supplies and subdued export demand, Kedia advisory said in a note. However, the supply-side concerns continue to offer underlying support. Downside remains limited due to persistently low arrivals and delayed sowing, particularly in Gujarat, where jeera acreage has fallen to 398,000 hectares, down over 16% year-on-year, marking one of the slowest sowing seasons in recent years, the brokerage said.
The most-active April contract of CORIANDER was down 1.4% to INR 11,160 per 100 kg due to profit booking, after prices touched a one-year high of INR 12,054 per 100 kg on Wednesday, as resistance at higher levels is capping gains, SMC Global said. However, the downside is limited as festive season buying, coupled with a decline in acreage in Gujarat, continues to lend support to the market.
