NEW DELHI - President Droupadi Murmu Sunday said India is on course to becoming the world's third-largest economy in the near future. In her customary address to the nation on the eve of India's 77th Republic Day, she lauded the contribution of women in India's progress, and said they are breaking traditional stereotypes and actively contributing to the overall development of the country.

"India is the world's fastest-growing major economy. Despite global uncertainties, India is recording continuous economic growth," she said, adding that the country is moving towards becoming the world's third-largest economy in the near future.

"By investing in the creation of world-class infrastructure, we are rebuilding our economic strength at a much larger scale. In this journey of shaping our economic destiny, 'atmanirbharata' (self-reliance) and ‘swadeshi' (local) are our guiding principles," Murmu said. She added that the latest changes in the goods and services tax and labour law reforms will benefit workers and accelerate the development of enterprises.

Mentioning Operation Sindoor -– India's cross-border air-strikes on terrorists' bases inside Pakistan in May 2025 -- Murmu said India's "self-reliance in the field of defence powered the historic success" of the military operation. She also said that in an atmosphere marked by conflicts in many parts of the world, India is spreading the message of world peace.

Lauding India's daughters, Murmu said Indian women are making their mark in every field, "from agriculture to space, from self-employment to the armed forces". "More than 10 crore (100 million) women associated with self-help groups are redefining the process of development... With increasing contribution by women, our country will set an example of an inclusive Republic based on gender equality," she said.

The President said millions of people have been lifted above the poverty line and efforts are being made to ensure that they do not fall back into the poverty trap. She said the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana is providing succour to nearly 810 million beneficiaries.

She pointed out that the protection of environment is a high global priority today, and that a lifestyle in harmony with nature has been a part of India's cultural tradition. "Let us make efforts to ensure that Mother Earth's precious resources remain available for future generations," she said.  End
