World steel body says global output down 3.7% on yr Dec, India output up 10%

NEW DELHI – Global crude steel production in December fell 3.7% on year to 139.6 million tonnes, according to a report by the World Steel Association. Steel output in top producer China fell over 10% to 68.2 million tonnes, while it rose 10% on year in India to 14.8 million tonnes last month, the data showed.  

 

Among other major producers, the US saw steel output rise 3.6% on year to 6.9 million tonnes in December, but Japan's output declined nearly 5% on year to 6.6 million tonnes. Russia is estimated to have produced 5.8 million tonnes, down 4.4% on year, and South Korea produced 5.2 million tonnes, down 2.4% on year, the data showed. 

 

Regionally, steel production trends were mixed. Asia and Oceania, the world's largest steel-producing region, saw output decline 6.3% on year to 99.7 million tonnes in December. However, steel output in the European Union rose 3.9% on year to 9.9 million tonnes.

 

Output in North America fell 0.4% on year to 9.0 million tonnes, and steel output in Russia and other Commonwealth of Independent States, as well as Ukraine, fell nearly 3% on year to 6.9 million tonnes, the data showed.  End
