MUMBAI – Prices of wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell due to weak demand while they remained steady in other key markets Friday, traders said. Prices of rice and maize were steady due to a lack of fresh cues, they said. Prices of wheat from Kota, Rajasthan, were unavailable as the market was shut on account of Basant Panchami, they said.
WHEAT prices in Indore fell by INR 20 per 100 kilograms to INR 2,770 per 100 kg due to low demand, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Wheat prices are expected to fall further once arrivals of the new rabi crop begin, he said. Prices of wheat in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, were steady at INR 3,000 per 100 kg, said wholesale trader Devendra Vora. Prices are likely to be steady in the near term due to subdued demand, Vora said. Prices of wheat from Kota were unavailable as the market was shut on the account of Basant Panchami, Ravi Mehta, a local trader, said.
Wheat sales by Food Corp. of India under the open market sales scheme were uneven across states on Wednesday, with weak offtake in Uttar Pradesh, but strong demand in Punjab, Haryana, and Assam. On Wednesday, FCI offered 107,500 tonnes of wheat under the open market sales scheme and sold 89,748 tonnes or nearly 84%, according to sources. In Uttar Pradesh, millers and processors bought only 2,230 tonnes, or 28% of the 8,000 tonnes offered in the state. At last week's auction, FCI's wheat sales in the state were moderate at a little over 4,000 tonnes, or nearly 78% of the 5,300 tonnes it offered.
Prices of MAIZE in Indore remained unchanged at INR 1,770 per 100 kg due to a lack of fresh cues, Kochar said. "Prices are expected to fall by INR 100 per kg as the new rabi arrivals start," he said. Maize prices in Davangere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 1,700-INR 1,850 per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals in the market were largely steady at 3,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), he said.
Prices of the main varieties of RICE were steady in Vashi. The 1401 and 1121 varieties of basmati rice quoted at INR 8,000-INR 8,200 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-INR 8,800, respectively, Vora said. "There is subdued demand for rice in the market," he said.
Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, were also steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a trader. "Prices are expected to remain steady for around two months, as there is very little demand in the market," Shankar said. End
