MUMBAI – Under the influence of a fresh western disturbance, heavy rainfall or snowfall is likely over parts of Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday, along with light to moderate rainfall over the adjoining plains of northwest India during the same period, the India Meteorological Department said.
In the past 24 hours, most parts of northwest India recorded spells of moderate rainfall and snowfall accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and hailstorms, the department said. This was likely due to the presence of a well-marked low pressure lying over north Pakistan, with its associated cyclonic circulation extending northwards, it said.
An upper cyclonic circulation currently lies over south interior Karnataka, which is expected to lead to thunderstorms accompanied by lightning over parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on Monday, the weather department said.
Dense to very dense fog conditions are likely during the morning and night hours in parts of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh from Saturday to Monday, the weather department said. Dense fog conditions are expected in parts of Himachal Pradesh from Saturday to Monday, in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh on Sunday, and in sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim on Monday, the department said. Visibility drops to 0–50 metres in "very dense fog" conditions and to 51–200 metres in "dense fog" conditions.
The weather department has warned of cold wave conditions in parts of Himachal Pradesh on Sunday and Monday. A cold wave condition is when the minimum temperature drops to 10 degrees Celsius or less in the plains and 0 degree Celsius or lower in hilly regions, according to the weather bureau.
The minimum temperature over the plains of northwest India, including Delhi, is likely to fall by 3–4 degrees Celsius in the next 24 hours, the weather bureau said. No change in minimum temperature is expected over the region in the next two days, after which a gradual rise of 2–4 degrees Celsius is likely in the subsequent four days, the bureau said.
In central India, the minimum temperature is expected to gradually fall by 2–4 degrees Celsius in the next three days, and thereafter gradual rise by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the subsequent four days. The minimum temperature in Maharashtra is likely to fall gradually by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the next 48 hours, after which a gradual rise in the same range is seen in the subsequent three days, the bureau said.
The minimum temperature in Gujarat is expected to fall gradually by 2–3 degrees Celsius in the next 24 hours, and thereafter rise by 2–4 degrees Celsius in the subsequent four days, the weather bureau said. No significant change in minimum temperature is likely over the rest of the country, the bureau said. End
