MUMBAI – Prices of chana saw a mixed trend, while prices of tur rose, and prices of masur remained unchanged in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Chana prices fell in some markets, while they were steady in others due to low market activity, they said. Prices of tur continued to rise steeply for the third consecutive day on reports of unexpected crop damage and loss in Maharashtra, they said. Masur prices were steady due to lack of cues.
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,800-INR 5,850 per 100 kg, said Raja Jain, a local trader. Prices are unchanged amid tepid market activity due to seasonally low demand, he said. There are no major festivals in February, and preparations for the upcoming wedding season will begin only in the second half of February or early March, he said. Arrivals of the old stock of chana are also muted, matching the demand and keeping prices steady, he said.
Prices are likely to fluctuate by INR 50–INR 100 per 100 kg till arrivals of the new rabi crop begin in full swing post Holi, which takes place in the first week of March, Jain said. As of Jan. 16, the acreage of chana in the ongoing rabi season was up 5.1% on year at 9.59 million hectares, data from the agriculture department showed.
Prices of chana in Delhi fell by INR 25 from the previous day to INR 5,800-INR 5,825 per 100 kg, traders said.
Prices of new TUR in Akola, Maharashtra, rose by INR 125 from Thursday to INR 8,100-INR 8,125 per 100 kg, said Ashok Gupta, a local trader. Prices have risen due to strong demand from stockists, he said. "Stockists are now fearful due to reports of damage to the Maharashtra crop, so they want to fill up their stocks as soon as possible," he said.
The kharif tur crop in Maharashtra, which was expected to be of good-to-excellent quality only a few weeks ago, has reportedly suffered some damage due to unfavourable weather conditions. Cloudy skies, cold temperatures, and dense fog caused issues in the crop during the final stage of its development, leading to around 20–30% yield loss in the state, Gupta said. This comes at a time when the output in Karnataka has already suffered due to excessive rainfall in September and October. Maharashtra and Karnataka are the top producers of the legume in the country.
With the surge in demand from stockists, importers are also selling their stocks imported from African countries and Myanmar at a higher rate, further pushing up domestic tur prices, Gupta said. Prices of domestic tur are likely to continue rising in the near term, he said.
Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 200 from the previous day to INR 8,200-INR 8,300 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 5,500-INR 5,700 per 100 kg, Jain said. Prices remained unchanged due to lack of fresh cues, he said. "There is no change in the masur market," he said. Arrivals of the new rabi masur crop are expected to begin post Feb. 20, he said. While most arrivals are likely to be purchased by the government, it will not begin its procurement unless prices slip below the minimum support price of INR 7,000 per 100 kg, he said. "It's not like the government begins procurement as soon as arrivals start. Besides, if the market rate is higher than the minimum support price, farmers won't even sell it (their stock) to the government," he said.
Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,200–INR 5,400 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the choti variety in Lalitpur were also steady at INR 6,500–INR 7,800 per 100 kg. End
