NEW DELHI – The water level in 166 key reservoirs of the country was 130.753 billion cubic metres as of Thursday, which is 71.2% of the total live storage capacity, data from the Central Water Commission showed. The water level was up 7.1% from a year ago and 23.5% higher than the normal storage for the period, which is the average storage for the past 10 years, as per the data.

 

In the northern region, the water level in reservoirs was 12.812 billion cubic metres, which is nearly 65% of the total live storage capacity. In the same period last year, the water level was almost 39% of the live storage capacity. The northern region includes Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Punjab.

 

In the eastern region, the water level in reservoirs was 14.932 billion cubic metres, nearly 69% of the total live storage capacity against nearly 65% in the corresponding period last year. The eastern region includes Assam, Jharkhand, Odisha, Tripura, Nagaland, West Bengal, and Bihar.

 

The water level in the western region was 31.349 billion cubic metres. This is over 82% of the total live storage capacity, against over 78% last year. The western region includes Maharashtra, Gujarat, and Goa.

 

In the central region, which includes Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Chhattisgarh, the water level in reservoirs was 35.548 billion cubic metres as of Thursday. This is over 73% of the total live storage capacity, compared with over 69% a year ago.

 

The water level in the southern region was 36.112 billion cubic metres, over 65% of the total live storage capacity, the data showed. At this time last year, the water level in the region was nearly 67% of the total live storage capacity.

 

Of the 166 reservoirs in the country, 155 reported more than 80% of normal storage and 11 were at 80% or below the normal storage. Of these 11, only one had storage up to 50% of the normal. India received an average of 0.1 millimetres of rainfall in the week ended Wednesday, 97% below the normal 3.9 millimetres for the period, according to the India Meteorological Department. End
