NEW DELHI – Ex-mill prices of sugar remained steady in key markets of Uttar Pradesh Thursday but rose slightly in Maharashtra. Market participants are waiting for the government to announce the sales quota for February by next week. They also expect the Centre to increase the minimum selling price of sugar, traders said.

"Monday being Republic Day, the market is expecting sales quota on Friday or after Tuesday," Mukesh Kuvadia, the secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association. The government fixes the maximum quantity of sugar available for sale every month to support prices and help mills clear the arrears of sugarcane farmers. It also sets the monthly sales quotas for each sugar mill.

In Maharashtra, sugar prices rose INR 10 per 100 kg, mainly due to anticipation of a hike in minimum selling price, Kuvadia said. On Friday, ChiniMandi, a sugar trade media, reported that the government is likely to increase the minimum selling price of sugar soon, adding that it could be raised to INR 37.50–INR 38.00 per kg. Currently, the minimum selling price of sugar is INR 31 per kg, unchanged since February 2019.

Ex-mill prices in Uttar Pradesh remained unchanged from the previous day due to lack of fresh cues, Naresh Gupta, a north India-based trader, said.

Following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:

--M-grade sugar flat at INR 3,900-INR 4,080 per 100 kg in Uttar Pradesh

--Up INR 10 at INR 3,910-INR 3,992 per 100 kg in Mumbai

--Up INR 10 at INR 3,760-INR 3,800 per 100 kg in Kolhapur

At 1614 IST, the price of sugar on the Intercontinental Exchange was up 0.3% at 14.8 cents per pound.  End

US$1 = INR 91.63
