MUMBAI – Prices of wheat in Kota, Rajasthan, fell Thursday due to low demand, while they remained steady in other key spot markets, traders said. Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, also fell due to low demand and higher arrivals. Prices of rice remained unchanged in the key spot markets due to lack of fresh cues, they said.

WHEAT prices in Kota fell by INR 80 per 100 kilograms to INR 2,460 per 100 kg due to sluggish demand, Ravi Mehta, a local trader, said. Arrivals in the Kota market fell by 2,000 bags to 5,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Prices of wheat in Indore in Madhya Pradesh were steady at INR 2,790 per 100 due to a lack of fresh cues, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices of wheat in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, were steady at INR 3,000 per 100 kg, said wholesale trader Devendra Vora. Prices are likely to be steady in the near term due to subdued demand, Vora said.

While the government has allowed the export of 500,000 tonnes of wheat products, it is yet to lift the ban on wheat exports. However, Kochar expects the government to start exporting wheat once the rabi crop is harvested amid prospects of record high production. "Government might start export of 1–2 million tonnes initially," he said. At the same time, other traders do not see the government allowing wheat exports in the near term.

Prices of MAIZE in Davanagere fell by INR 100 to INR 1,700-INR 1,850 per 100 kg due to a lack of demand and higher arrivals, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals in the Karnataka market rose by 1,500 to 2,500 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), he said. Prices of maize in Indore remained unchanged at INR 1,770 per 100 kg due to lack of fresh triggers, Kochar said. "Prices are expected to fall by INR 100 per kg as the new rabi arrivals start," he said.

Prices of the main varieties of RICE were steady in Vashi. The 1401 and 1121 varieties of basmati rice quoted at INR 8,000-INR 8,200 per 100 kg and INR 8,400-INR 8,800, respectively, Vora said. "There is subdued demand for rice in the market," he said.

Prices of sona masoori rice, a premium non-basmati variety, were also steady at INR 5,600-INR 5,800 per 100 kg at Bhavanipuram in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, said Ravi Shankar, a trader. "Prices are expected to remain steady for around two months, as there is very little demand in the market," Shankar said.  End
