NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all spices were up on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Wednesday. Prices of turmeric rose on rising quality concerns of the new crop and those of jeera were bouyed by good demand and reduced sowing, analysts said. Prices of coriander rose on festival demand and lower acreage, they said. Among the upcoming festivals, Basant Panchami will be celebrated on Friday.

The most-active April contract of TURMERIC was up 0.7% at INR 17,898 per 100 kg on uncertainity over quality of the new crop which has begun arriving in some markets. Arrivals of lusterless quality in some pockets of Nizamabad are observed for the last two days, SMC Global said. However, the brokerage sees limited upside owing to a favorable crop size which will weigh on prices once arrivals begin in full swing.

The most-active March contract of JEERA was up 2.7% at INR 24,970 per 100 kg bouyed by good demand and reduced sowing, SMC Global said. In Gujarat, which accounts for over 60% of India's cumin output, sowing has fallen by at least 7%, Kedia Advisory said. This reduction, it said, reflects crop switching and moisture stress during early sowing. Field reports from Rajasthan and Gujarat also indicate dew-related crop stress, raising concerns over seed weight and export-quality recovery which is pushing up prices, the brokerage said.

The most-active April contract of CORIANDER was up 0.5% at INR 11,940 per 100 kg on festival season demand, which is expected to keep prices high, SMC Global said. However, the upside may be capped by weak buying interest at elevated levels. According to the brokerage, prices are likely to stay firm in the INR 11,810-INR 11,950 per 100 kg range.
