Gujarat rabi acreage up 2% on year at 4.92 mln ha as on Mon

MUMBAI – The area under rabi crops in Gujarat stood at 4.92 million hectares as on Monday, up nearly 2% on year from 4.84 million hectares a year ago, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. The area covered so far has surpassed the state's normal rabi acreage of 4.64 million hectares, which is the average of the last three years.

 

Wheat acreage in the state was up at 1.47 million hectares compared to 1.37 million hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area sown with maize rose to 144,705 hectares from 134,458 hectares. The total area under all cereal crops was 1.65 million hectares, up from 1.53 million hectares a year ago.

 

The area under chana rose to 911,894 hectares from 848,404 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The total area under all pulses in the state was up 965,770 hectares, up from 919,772 hectares a year ago.

 

The total area under all oilseed crops so far was 285,167 hectares, up from 260,374 hectares covered a year ago, the report showed. Under oilseeds, the acreage of mustard rose to 283,727 hectares from 258,221 hectares.

 

Sugarcane acreage in the state was 180,540 hectares, up from 178,728 hectares a year ago, the report showed. The area under tobacco rose to 172,395 hectares from 163,813 hectares a year ago. Cumin acreage in the state was down at 407,542 hectares from 476,481 hectares a year ago, and coriander acreage slipped to 125,881 hectares from 130,731 hectares.

 

The area under onion fell to 92,924 hectares from 93,509 hectares a year ago, according to the report. The acreage of vegetables was down at 208,655 hectares compared to 219,845 hectares a year ago, while that of potato rose to 168,014 hectares from 156,207 hectares a year ago.  End
