NEW DELHI – Soybean prices rose in key markets on firm demand and tight supplies, while mustard prices remained largely steady amid a favourable crop outlook and comfortable supplies, market participants said.
SOYBEAN prices rose in key markets of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan on firm demand and tight supplies. The benchmark price of soybean in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose INR 500 to INR 5,400 per 100 kg, the Solvent Extractors' Association of India said in a note.
In Kota, soybean prices rose INR 250 to INR 5,520-INR 5,555 per 100 kilograms, according to spot prices on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange. Soybean arrivals across the country were around 225,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), according to GGN Research.
Soybean prices have gained 10% so far in January as arrivals tapered after peaking in Nov-Dec, K.N. Rahiman, research analyst at Greenleaf, said. Firm demand from the poultry feed sector during the winter season, on account of higher protein consumption, and strong demand from millers are also supporting soybean prices, he added.
However, weak export demand for both soybean and soymeal is likely to cap the upside, he added. Soymeal exports in December fell nearly 59% on year to 114,697 tonnes due to relatively uncompetitive prices, according to SEA.
MUSTARD seed prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were unchanged at INR 7,250-7,275 per 100 kilograms, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Mustard seed arrivals across the country were around 200,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), unchanged from the previous day.
In Kota, mustard seed prices were flat at INR 6,600 per 100 kg, local trader Mahesh Sameriya said. The benchmark price of mustard seed was flat at INR 7,150 per 100 kg, SEA said in a note.
Despite the volatility seen in other domestic oilseeds such as soybean and cottonseed, mustard prices have largely been steady in January, Rahiman said. A favourable crop outlook and comfortable supplies in the market have kept mustard prices largely range-bound, he added.
The area under rapeseed and mustard, the largest winter oilseed, was up 3.2% on year at 8.94 million hectares as of Friday, according to the agriculture ministry.
