MUMBAI – Futures contract of silver on the Multi Commodity Exchange of India surged to another record high Tuesday, hitting the upper circuit on the exchange. Silver prices rose tracking gains on the COMEX amid rising tensions between the US and the European Union, which have prompted market participants to move towards safe-haven assets such as gold and silver.
At 1516 IST, the most-active March silver contract on the domestic bourse was at INR 321,475 per kg, after hitting the upper circuit at INR 327,998 per kg earlier. On the COMEX, silver prices were up over 7% at $95.09 per ounce after rising to a new all-time high of $95.41 per ounce.
Geopolitical tensions have surged over the past few days after US President Donald Trump imposed new tariffs on eight European nations over his push to acquire Greenland. Trump imposed 10% tariffs on imports from European countries, starting Feb. 1. The tariffs would increase to 25% on Jun. 1 and continue until a deal is reached for the US to acquire Greenland.
For the rest of the day, the March silver contract is expected to trade in a range of INR 224,000-INR 335,000 per kg on the MCX, according to Kedia Advisory. End
