NEW DELHI – Futures contracts of all spices were up on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Monday. Prices of turmeric rose amid tight supply conditions ahead of new arrivals, while those of jeera were up because of buying ahead of festivals, weather-related disruptions, and delayed sowing, analysts said. Prices of coriander were up on festival demand and lower acreage, they said. Among the upcoming festivals, Basant Panchami will be celebrated on Friday.

The most-active April contract of TURMERIC was up 3.2% at INR 17,950 per 100 kg on tight supply ahead of new arrivals, SMC Global Securities said in a note. Market sentiment remains firm as both farmers and stockists have significantly reduced their inventories, limiting near-term availability ahead of arrival of the new crop, Kedia Advisory said. However, the rise in prices can be limited as fresh arrivals are expected to start by the end of January, said SMC.

The most-active March contract of JEERA was up 4.4% at INR 24,575 per 100 kg with strong export demand, festival season buying, and lower sowing levels supporting the overall market tone, SMC Global said. In Gujarat, sowing was at 400,000 hectares, down over 16% from a year ago, as uneven rainfall has slowed field preparation, marking one of the slowest sowing seasons in recent years, Kedia Advisory said. Low arrivals at Unjha and premium prices for good-quality cumin are lending underlying support, the brokeage said.

The most-active April contract of CORIANDER was up 4.7% at INR 11,798 per 100 kg on festival season demand, which is expected to keep prices high, SMC Global said. However, the upside may be capped by weak buying interest at elevated levels. According to the brokerage, prices are likely to consolidate in the INR 11,200-INR 11,340 per 100 kg range.
