NEW DELHI – India's oilmeal exports in December fell nearly 40% on year to 240,900 tonnes, driven by declines in soymeal and groundnut meal shipments, according to data released by The Solvent Extractors' Association of India on Monday. For Apr-Dec, oilmeal exports were down nearly 6% at 2.98 million tonnes.

Soymeal exports in December fell nearly 59% on year to 114,697 tonnes due to relatively uncompetitive prices. In Apr-Dec, soymeal exports declined 16% on year to 1.25 million tonnes, SEA data showed. Domestic demand for soymeal also remained tepid.

"Since the last two years, soybean meal manufacturers have been facing weak demand from domestic livestock feed makers, who are showing a preference towards the cheaper distillers dried grains with soluble (DDGS), a by-products of ethanol production from grains such as corn and rice," SEA said.

Exports of groundnut meal fell over 47% on year to 1,609 tonnes in December, but were up more than 58% on year at 23,015 tonnes during Apr-Dec. Meanwhile, mustard meal exports in December fell 19.5% to 71,452 tonnes due to lower crushing of rapeseed. However, mustard meal shipments during Apr-Dec rose nearly 2% to 1.43 million tonnes, the association said.

The latest price increase in the global market will also curb Chinese demand for Indian rapeseed meal, SEA said. Currently, Indian mustard meal prices are being quoted at freight on board price of $250 compared to Hamburg ex-mill mustard meal rates of $247 as on Jan. 14, SEA said.

"Recently few additional companies have been approved, or their application are under process by GACC, China, through the Export Inspection Council of India (EIC) for export of rapeseed meal to China," it added.

Rice bran meal exports in December rose to 31,237 tonnes from 70 tonnes a year ago, after the government opened exports in October. For Apr-Dec, rice bran meal exports rose to 69,494 tonnes from 14,391 tonnes a year ago. In July 2023, the government had banned the export of de-oiled rice bran, citing high domestic prices of cattle feed and milk products.

India's oilmeal exports to major trading partners declined from last year – those to South Korea fell over 46%, Bangladesh by nearly 41%, and Thailand by over 34%, SEA data showed.

The following table details exports of various oilmeals, in tonnes, in December and Apr-Dec, compared with the year-ago numbers, according to the latest data from SEA, with the year-on-year change in percentage terms:
