MUMBAI – Futures contracts of turmeric and jeera fell while those of coriander rose on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Friday. Prices of turmeric fell due to a drop in demand and expectations of new crop arrivals by the end of January, analysts said. Prices of jeera fell due to muted export demand, they said. Coriander prices rose due to the ongoing festival demand amid a decline in acreage, they said.
The most-active April contract of TURMERIC fell 0.3% to INR 17,330 per 100 kg as buying appetite declined due to expectations of commencement of new arrivals in the near term with an "estimated good crop size", analysts at SMC Global Securities said. "India's turmeric crop for the 2026 harvest is shaping up with increased planted area," Kedia Advisory said in a note. For the 2025–26 season, turmeric acreage across the country is estimated at 302,000 hectares, up about 4% from last year, with fresh production projected at 1.14 million tonnes, Kedia Advisory said. Arrivals of the fresh crop by late January are expected to prevent any surge in prices, SMC Global said.
The most-active March contract of JEERA was down 0.8% at INR 23,520 per 100 kg due to subdued export demand, Kedia Advisory said. However, the fall in prices is likely to be limited due to rise in demand ahead of the wedding season, SMC Global said. Prices also fell due to a sharp decline in acreage across the country. Jeera acreage in Gujarat, one of the key producers of the spice, fell to 98,438 hectares from 476,097 hectares a year ago as of Monday, data from the state agriculture department showed.
The most-active April contract of CORIANDER was up 0.8% at INR 11,240 per 100 kg as the market sentiment remains supported due lower acreage of the spice so far, SMC Global said. In Gujarat, one of the key producers of the spice, coriander acreage was 125,510 hectares as of Monday, down from 130,449 hectares. Prices are likely to remain in the upper range in the near term, the brokerage said.
